Wits vice-chancellor Professor Adam Habib said that it was “outrageous” that some protestors chanted and sang “dubula i-Juda” (shoot the Jew), at a protest against an Israeli musician on campus this week.
“It is irresponsible when anyone propagates the murder of another on the basis of religion, race or ethnicity,” said Habib.
The protest in response to the concert of Daniel Zamir was held in the Wits University Great Hall but another group of protesters went to a corridor inside the Central Block building and protested from there. This is the same group that sang the song.

The coordinator of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS), Muhammed Desai, said many African people in South Africa when using the word “Jews” meant it in the same way they would have during the eighties. “Just like you would say kill the Boer at funeral during the eighties it wasn’t about killing white people, it was used as a way of identifying with the apartheid regime”.

Members of the Academic Staff Association of Wits University and the group Academic Freedom were present as independent observers at the protest. Kezia Lewins who was part of the observers said the protest had been relatively peaceful but a full report would be made available at a later stage. Members of the Legal Resources Centre were also there to provide legal advice to the protesters and to observe as well.

I assume, based on his comments, that Muhammed Desai will not be offended if I respond, referring to him, by saying “shoot the a$$hole.”
Dear Rob, there are two problems with the song that was sung: 1) it is a form of racial victimisation and hatred, 2) it is an incitement to violence. Your comment is also in the language of violence. I am interested in how you justify condemning the use of one call to violence with another? I condemn the song for its racist hatred against a particular ethnicity, and I therefore unfortunately condemn your ill-considered invocation of violence in response. I would respectfully request that the Vuvuzela moderator explain why and how this comment passed moderation?
It is wrong to sing or chant for the death of another ethnic group, period. Normal people accept this. Some BDS fanatics do not, and they show their true hatreds by not rejecting such conduct (they also reveal inner motives by concentrating all their invective against Jewish Israel, while ignoring dozens of other aggrieved people, such as Tibetans, Myanmar Muslims, Coptic Christians, etc.). To the less fanatic BDS supporters I can only remind you, if you lay down with dogs, you’ll wake up with fleas.
Juan, there was no racial profiling at the event. Don’t be silly, why must Habib address something which was clearly a ploy to stop the concert
Have you ever been to an airport, or event where security need to do a thorough check? The only reason there was security there is because last time (and on many occasions around the world), there have been incidents of violence. Come now, do the readers of Vuvuzela really have to spell this out to you?
Dear Marc,
You have confused two issues. What happens at airports, when on the grounds of security, particular ethnicities are singled out for background checks is racial profiling. Some, like you, would argue – as you are doing here – that this kind of racial profiling is justifiable. Others, like me, would argue that it is not. But, it is racial profiling, whether one finds it justifiable or not. There was documented evidence of this in relation to this concert. That is not disputable. You consider it necessary and justifiable, just as some may justify the offensive song that Professor Habib rightly condemned. So if Professor Habib can decide when something is unnecessary and racially victimising, then he can and should indicate the same with respect to the racial profiling that was indisputably demonstrated in this instance. And, for the record, there were were allegations of violence at the previous concert. There has been no judicial decision on whether there actually was violence, and until then, your statement is inaccurate.
Juan, I am afraid you are simply wrong.
It is an indisputable fact that the event was well attended by ALL ethnicities and lovers of music, particularly Jewish Klezmer. Stop trying to paint this a-political gathering as a political event.
Second, unfortunately we live in a world where security checks are necessary. As ideal as you and I would like to live in a world without security, the fact remains that threats to innocent get-togethers of this nature are a soft target for violent, often fatal, attacks around the world. BDS events too have at times turned violent. Wits students and visitors of ALL backgrounds and beliefs, have a right to enjoy a concert, which is not political at all, in peace and without the threat of violence.
I commend Habib for making a statement that the song was irresponsible and inappropriate. But, Habib refused to say a word about Wits students being racially profiled for this concert, despite staff and students sending him complaints about this. Condemning the song without condemning the racial profiling that was associated with this Wits-organised event undermines his own credibility, and that’s poor leadership.
