Wits Campus Control arrested a man on campus this morning following allegations of theft.
A man has been arrested for theft on the Wits University main campus earlier this morning. The individual used a student card to access the university’s premises but it is unclear if he is a registered student. Campus Control says the individual was arrested in connection with a previous incident involving the theft of a laptop.
Campus Crime Prevention and Liaison Manager, Mashudu Khumela, told Wits Vuvuzela that the individual has frequently been seen on the campus but security thought he was an ordinary student. “When we were doing our investigation, [through] CCTV cameras, it led us to a very similar character. We informed our guys and he was arrested,” Khumela said.
Khumela said the accused has not provided accurate information to Campus Control. “He is giving us a student number that belongs to an active female student. The name he gave us does not appear on the system”. Khumela added that his office is still working on the identity of the individual.
The suspect will be detained at Hillbrow Police Station for the existing case of theft.
