The Wits men and women basketball teams were triumphant at the University Sport South Africa (USSA)Basketball tournament held in Stellenbosch earlier this month. The Wits men’s team, Horny Bucks, who are back-to-back winners of the tournament, had a strong start, winning all of their first five games which paved the way for their 63-53 final match win against University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

Horny Bucks player, Wayne Mhlongo, said the team had been mentally and physically ready for the tournament. The team attributes its win to the work it has been putting in throughout the
years. The team’s coach, Tshiamo Ngakane told Wits Vuvuzela this year’s win was personal. “It feels like we’re on our way to achieving what we set out to do. We can feel that legacy being built,” he said.

The Wits women’s team, Lady Bucks, played against 2016 champions Vaal University of Technology, winning 52-42. Lady Bucks player, Fortunate Bosega, said, the team had “slogged their
lives away” for this moment. The win was the best feeling because at that point nobody could defeat their team. Bosega added that the win was possible as the team did not work as talented individuals but rather as a unit.

Besides taking gold at the tournament, players from Wits Basketball were individually recognised. Bosega took the women’s Most Valued Player (MVP) award. Modiegi Mokoka
was recognised as an all-star player. From the men’s team, Angelo Quinn and Miguel Ferrão were also acknowledged as all-star players. The victory saw both teams getting new kits and well deserved bragging rights for the rest of the year.

Ngakane said the team can now look forward to the Gauteng University Basketball League. The Horny Bucks are undefeated in the league.
