Students are being asked to suggest new retail outlets for The Matrix building.

WITS UNIVERSITY Services department is calling for students to suggest a new name for The Matrix building and to suggest new retail outlets they would like to see in the building.

Wits University’s spokesperson Shirona Patel said that the renaming of buildings is a project that started three years ago.

“So far we have renamed the Mathematics Science Building on West Campus as TW Kambule Mathematical Sciences Building and Senate House as Solomon Mahlangu House,” she said.

Student Representative Council spokesperson Sandla Mtotywa said they welcomed the call for The Matrix to be renamed and it was the right time for students to claim it as theirs.

“The process to change the name should be student centred. They should be involved from the beginning up until the name is chosen,” he said.
Mtotywa said that Wits should de-privatise the Matrix.

“Students can’t even afford to buy food there because prices are inflated. This has to stop.”

He added that more shops should sell healthy food because at the moment they were selling “unhealthy fast food”.

Second-year BA Film and Television student, Angel Sefalane, told Wits Vuvuzela that the university was not doing enough consultations with students to suggest a new name.

“I didn’t know about this (The Matrix being renamed). I didn’t receive any email from the university asking me or other students to suggest a new name for The Matrix,” she said.
The 20-year-old added that she would like to see more bookstores that sell recreational books on campus rather than academic books.

Students can send their name suggestions to the website that has been set up by the services department. Click here.
