Inner city residents to get a private facility at ‘affordable’ prices
The Clinix Health Group (CHG) is planning to open a day hospital and pharmacy in the Central Business District (CBD) of Johannesburg before the end of July.
The hospital, to be named after the late Advocate Godfrey Mokgonane Pitje, who was also the president of the ANC Youth League between 1949 and 1951, will operate between 07:00 to 17:00, from Monday to Friday.
“Whether or not we open during the weekend will be dependent on how the people interact with the hospital and we will have a 24-hour urgent unit for people that need immediate assistance,” said CHG marketing manager Cama Rebe,
The hospital, to share the same address as CHG headquarters at 56 Von Wielligh Street, will be open to patients who require minor surgeries. Those with broader health issues will be referred to specialists at nearby CHG facilities.
According to Rebe, the prices at the hospital will be affordable to students as they will be cheaper than other private hospitals, to cater for the residents of the CBD.
“We will not have [specific] price plans for students before we open because our prices are already low and we want to observe whether they are suitable for them or not,” she said.
Naledi Joyi, a 21-year-old psychology honours student at Wits said she didn’t think she could afford to go to the day hospital, “because it is private and I don’t have medical aid”. She expected she would only use the pharmacy.
Further, operating hours would have to be extended “because most students are still on campus at 16:00”, said the Marshalltown resident.
A street vendor who works on Von Wielligh, Khuliso Kaseng, said the hospital would be helpful for people living in the area, including himself.
“I will use the pharmacy to buy some small medication because it is very close and I can access it easily. I will have to know how [high] the prices of the hospital are before I use it,” the 27-year-old said.
