Matric students from Alexandra township and Soweto were treated to a Wits experience by Wits RAG and Everywoman Society on Wednesday.
The initiative, called the ‘Take a Child to Varsity Day’ is the brainchild of the Everywoman Society. Inspired Cell-C`s annual ‘Take A Girl Child To Work Day’ initiative, the two Wits societies paired up to 100 bring 100 Grade 12 learners (50 from Soweto ,50 from Alex)and pair them with mentors-Wits students who are in the fields of study that the Matriculants want to pursue next year. The mentors attend lectures with their mentees and explain to them how to go about applying to Wits for next year and informing the about their respective degrees.
Tselane Makhetha ,Everywoman Society Chairperson explained why they included boys in the initiative , “we aim to empower both the girl and boy child within our communities because we believe that if both are empowered and educated they will work towards a common goal on improving the many negative situations in the country.”
Makhetha also explained that the kids were selected by their teachers as the Top Academic Achievers in their grades and schools respectively.
Hollard Insurance Marketing Executive Mike O`Shea and media personality Claire Mawisa spoke to the learners about the challenges that may lie ahead for them. Both speakers relayed their personal experiences and obstacles they had faced towards reaching where they are in their lives, and engaged in vibrant Q&A sessions with the learners.
18-year-old Lindokuhle Mbatha, a Matric learner from Noordgesig High School said, “Today was quite wonderful especially with my mentors. I got an idea about how to cope with varsity life. I also enjoyed the motivational speakers.”
