IN-DEPTH REPORTING PROJECT 2025
Joburg, a world-class African city?
Is Johannesburg a world-class African city? That was the provocation given to this year’s cohort for consideration and investigation. Their curiosity led them down varied paths, which revealed to them everything from the city’s unique culture to its knowledge ecosystem, the local economy, and more.
This long-form project is the culmination of their Honours in Journalism and Media Studies programme at the Wits Centre for Journalism.

Alternative subculture in the heart of a world-class African city
In a city chasing world-class status, Johannesburg’s alternative youth measure this goal not through politics or wealth, but by how freely the city’s residents can express themselves and live the lives they choose, no matter how unconventional.
Mbali Khumalo

In their words...

Would you sacrifice your sleep for a chance at success? In Johannesburg, this is more than just something to think about—it’s something many people live with every single day.
Bontle Malowa

“Listening also meant confronting my own impatience. Johannesburg trains us to multitask scroll while walking, edit while eating, plan while you listen. I realised how much I mirrored the very same culture I was critiquing.”
Inside South Africa’s hopes for Formula 1’s return to Kyalami
