Staff and students are invited to participate at the annual David Webster Memorial sports tournament on April 13 at Wits University.

David Webster, after whom the David Webster Hall of Residence was named, was a Wits anthropology lecturer in the 1970s who was assassinated outside his home in Troyeville, Johannesburg..

Dennis Tshabalala, sports officer for football said, “As the Wits Sports Administration (WSA) we wanted an event to commemorate what he has done.”

Every year the WSA hosts an annual tournament to honourWebster’s memory.

“We encourage staff and students to take part and hopefully some of us will lose half a kilo doing that,” said Tshabalala.

This tournament will take place at Walter Milton Oval on East Campus. Some of the sports on offer include the 5 km fun run, ultimate Frisbee, netball and volleyball.

Tshabalala said, “the fun run will take place inside campus from Bozzoli right through to west campus”.

The fun run, which costs R10.00 per entrant, will start at 12:30 and all other events will follow after the run ends at 14:30. There is no charge for the other events.

“The top 10 participants of the fun run will get medals and the top two participants of the other activities will get medals.”

To participate, staff and students need to register at the Old Mutual Sports Hall before April 11.
