Witsies who love being physically active are in for a treat with the new state-of-the-art gym opening in July — at a cost of R2 000 a year.
The gym, called Techno Gym, will be operated by the joint venture of Zenzele Fitness and the Techno Gym companies on behalf of the university and is being built above the squash complex opposite Hall 29.
Techno Gym will cost more than existing health and fitness options on campus. Its R2 000 fee for an academic year is three times more than the R600 the gym at the Old Mutual Building.
The technologically advanced gym features a TGS Wellness System which is a “wellness cloud” which digitally shares a person’s fitness information and gives the user an opportunity to have a gym programme that is specially tailored for them.
“It gives us a platform to coach you and to assign a programme using a key that works with the equipment in the gym,” says Deen Rhoda, supervisor of the pre-sales team for the company.
According to Rhoda, this means members can get an assessment done by the gym team to get a specialised gym programme based on their fitness and wellness needs. This information is then digitally recorded and you get an exercise plan for every gym session. This information will be recorded on a key, which you can plug into the gym equipment to access your personalised information. This makes it easier for the users to track their progress and to receive coaching from the fitness team.
Rhoda says the new space will feature things such as a spinning studio, aerobics studio with various options such as dance, step classes and pilates to name a few. The gym will also have personal trainers to complement the “personal trainer in your pocket” approach. There will also be a huge cardio section featuring 14 treadmills, rowing machines and upright bikes.
Students who sign up for a membership at the Old Mutual Building gym can have their fee used to pay part of their Techno Gym membership.
Because the gym is only starting at mid-year, a 2016 membership for the Techno Gym can be purchased for R975. The assessment and gym key will also be free, for now, says Rhoda.
