Tshiamo Ngakane, head coach of the Wits Bucks, said that this was the first title win for the men’s team.

“For a team to blow opposition like that throughout the tournament shows just how good the squad has been,” Ngakane said.Representing Wits in basketball was a big deal for the players.  Angelo Quinn, a second year student, said winning the tournament was “huge for us”, and that winning “didn’t feel real”. Quinn said his team was strong and they believed they had a good shot at winning. Wits Bucks won all its group games and the quarterfinals, and beat University of Johannesburg (UJ) by 20 points in the semi-final.

Another second year student, Siphesihle Buthelezi, said he felt really good to represent the whole university and being part of the team. He said there was a lot of responsibility but it was also a fun experience.

The Wits basketball team, according to Ngakane, will work towards adding more trophies to its shelf.
