Wits Football Club will be hosting the last leg of the Engen Knockout Challenge which will take place this weekend at the Marks Park Sports Club, Emmarentia.
The annual national tournament launched its 2016 campaign in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape early this month and is ending its rounds in Gauteng with the championships from Friday July 29th until Sunday July 31st.
Wits has two teams participating in the tournament, with Wits Junior FC being in Group B with Polokwane FC, Shumba FC and Tuks FC.
Coach Lucas Mautla said the team is very competitive and would bring something different to the competition.
“We are really hungry for this and I am certain that we’ll finish in the top four,” Mautla said.
“The Wits Junior team is currently undefeated in their domestic league and will be looking to cement their presence in the contest because we are still going strong,” said Cameron Ryan who is their club manager.
The Bidvest FC team, which falls under the nine Premier Soccer League development clubs participating in the competition, is placed in Group D alongside Soweto All Stars, Black Aces and Rosina Sedibane FC.
The tournament is famously known for discovering young talent in South Africa and has unearthed the likes of capped Bafana Bafana players, Thulani Serero and Ronwen Williams. The team that wins will go on to play the Champs of Champs competition in October where all the regional champions will play each other.
