The Wits SRC election results were announced this morning, with the Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) taking all 15 seats.
The Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) walked away with all 15 seats on the 2016/2017 SRC. The results were finally announced after a delay of more than two hours early this morning on the steps of the Great Hall on main campus.
The announcement was made by Wits Dean of Students, Dr Puleng Lenka-Bula to a modest gathering of students which did not include SRC candidates from Wits EFF or Project W.
“We apologise for the delay and thank you for your patience,” Lenka-Bula told the waiting crowd. She later told Wits Vuvuzela that the results had been delayed as the IEC had other matters to deal with.
In last year’s election (2015/2016) the PYA won 12 seats with Project W winning 3 seats. As with last year’s election the Wits EFF did not secure any seats. Lenka-Bula confirmed that the provisional results were based on the results of the electronic vote counting process.
Sihle Gili secured the highest number of votes in this election but declined to comment on her win. “We are not partaking in any interviews yet,” she told Wits Vuvuzela.
