Wits University is heading for a shutdown after an announcement by Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande that institutions will be left to determine their own fee increases to a maximum of 8% for 2016/2017.
Incoming SRC President Kefentse Mkhari announced the shutdown at Solomon Mahlangu House (Senate House), where students had gathered to listen to the announcement by the minister.
Led by members of the Wits SRC protestors are moving around campus asking students to leave their lectures to join the shutdown. Some students have barricaded the Amic Deck while SAPS continues to maintain a strong presence on campus.
Wits Vuvuzela has seen a letter circulating to staff in the School of Literature, Language and Media advising staff to cancel their lectures and leave campus if they feel “uncomfortable”.
