There appears to be confusion over the position of treasurer general of the Wits SRC.
The treasurer general of the Wits University Student Representative Council (SRC), Sivuyile Mhatu, has been relieved of his duties and is no longer a member of the student body.
This is according to Senior Programme Adviser for Student Governance, Jabu Mashinini, who told Wits Vuvuzela that “Mhatu is now registered as a part-time student, therefore cannot serve in the SRC in line with the provisions of the SRC Constitution”. Section 6, sub section 3(a) of the Wits SRC constitution says that “a candidate for the SRC must be a full time student”.
Mashinini said the current secretary general of the SRC, Warren Makoga, will temporarily fulfill the responsibilities of the treasurer general position. Makoga confirmed that he has taken over Mhatu’s duties as instructed by Mashinini. “I was told on the 16th (February) that I am supposed to act. I was told by Jabu Mashinini in the presence of the president (Orediretse Masebe).”
SRC spokesperson Sandla Mtotywa said he is unaware of Mhatu’s removal from the organisation. “Officially, i know nothing. I have received no official communication and if we have a meeting tomorrow and it is brought up then I will know,” Mtotywa said.
Mhatu has declined to comment on the matter.
