Bidvest Wits are out of the CAF league once again.
Bidvest Wits are out of the CAF Champions league following their 2-3 loss to Angolan side Primero De Agosto at Bidvest Wits stadium on Saturday night, March 17. The team lost on penalties after the second-leg match ended 1-1 on aggregate.
Wits looked the stronger side at the start of the match as they dominated play. Agosto came close to scoring in the opening 10 minutes but could not capitalise on their opportunities. A foul on Wits’ Lehlohonolo Majoro outside the box in the 11th minute led to a Maliele Pule free kick that was easily handled by the Agosto keeper Adilson Cipriano.
Wits kept on the pressure but could not break the solid wall of the Agosto defence and the first half saw both teams head to the dressing rooms without anything to show for their efforts.
Wits goalie Darren Keet had to make a desperate save in the 46th minute, when Agosto striker Geraldo took aim at the net. The half time score remained at 0-0. This half was dominated by Wits but poor finishing let them down.
The first change of the game came win the second half when Wits swopped Sifiso Myeni for Thobani Mncwango.
Agosto strengthened their defence by parking the bus. Wits tried harder at this stage to push forward. Wits’ breakthrough came in the 81st minute with a brilliant strike. The game would have gone to Wits but they could not muster up a second goal for the victory. The aggregate score of 1-1 made way for a penalty shootout resulting in the 3-2 win for Agosto.
