VowFM have received eight nominations this year.

Wits University campus radio station Voice of Wits (VowFM) have been nominated eight times in the annual Liberty Radio Awards. The station, hosted by the Wits Radio Academy in the department of Journalism and Media Studies, will also compete against commercial radio stations Radio 702, KayaFM and PowerFM for the best business and finance shows in the country.

The station will also compete for top honours in the night-time show, content producer, afternoon drive show and afternoon drive presenter categories at the gala ceremony which is set to take place in Sandton in April this year.

VowFM content producer and presenter, Elna Schutz, told Wits Vuvuzela that competing with big commercial radio stations like Radio 702 shows that the hard work put in by the radio station and its staff is being noticed.

“I’m proud to be associated with this station, and I’m sure we going to come back from the ceremony as big winners,” she said.

VowFM marketing manager, Marona Seekane, said the station was honoured to be nominated for the awards.

“This is a sign that we are doing things right, even though we are a training ground for young people to establish themselves and learn radio,” Seekane said.

Seekane explained that winning these awards served as a huge stepping stone for their staff to the household radio stations in the country.

Seekane says that over 75% of the young people who have worked at the station have been employed by commercial radio stations and other large public radio stations in the past two years.

Liberty Radio Awards CEO and former VowFM station manager, Lance Rothschild, told Wits Vuvuzela that the awards have introduced two new categories.

“We have introduced online radio and podcast categories. We’re embracing technology and the amazing things that people are doing,” he said.
