Victory over Maritzburg United has left Clever Boys unbeaten in nine matches
AFTER picking up a 2-1 victory against Maritzburg United on Tuesday evening, April 3. Bidvest Wits have now moved back into the top eight. The Clever Boys now remain unbeaten for nine games.
The highly contested encounter at the Bidvest Stadium saw the team record their first victory over Maritzburg United this season following their stalemate in the first half of the Premier Soccer League.
Gavin Hunt, coach of the Bidvest Wits said, “The team did not start off the season brilliantly but they picked up momentum in the second half because they hung in there.”
Keegan Ritchie and Buhle Mkhwanazi scored the two goals for Wits.
The match started off with great enthusiasm from both teams with Bidvest scoring their first goal during the first half of the game. Maritzburg United levelled up early in the second half with a goal by Mohau Mokate.
During the second half, the home team took the lead again with a goal from Mkhwanazi, resulting in a 2-1 win for the boys from Braamfontein.
The team needed to secure their position on the log and “last night’s victory was a much needed win for them to get the three points”, said Hunt.
Neo Sehlahla, a BA honours in linguistics student, said that Bidvest Wits started off well as shown by the early goal during the first 15 minute but relaxed in the second half of the match.
“Their [Bidvest] performance started like a house on fire, however, they seemed somewhat relaxed in the second-half, which allowed Maritzburg to equalize. Over and above, the home team did a good job in securing their spot back in the league.”
Prior to last night’s match, Wits had recently been knocked out of the CAF Champions League by Premier de Agosto.
Wits will play Ajax Cape Town in the next game on April 11.
