Sharmin Naidoo primary objective is forge new relationships with stakeholders.

Wits University’s hockey and cricket teams have a new manager. Wits Sport has appointed former University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN) cricket head couch Sharmin Naidoo as the new manager of both teams as of Wednesday, August 1.

Naidoo told Wits Vuvuzela that it’s an absolute honour to join Wits and starts a new journey of placing Wits cricket and hockey on top of their respective leagues.

“I’m very thankful for the support the teams and staff have shown me so far. It’s also great to work with men and women who are committed and willing to walk an extra mile to make sure that we become a leading university of choice for sports students,” he said.

Naidoo, a UKZN BCom Accounting and Information System graduate, said his primary objective is to establish an enabling environment and forge new relationships with stakeholders.

“These teams have a lot of untapped potential and great facilities in place. All we need to do is to put in place systems and structures then we will do great,” he explained.
He said moving to Johannesburg after staying in KwaZulu-Natal his whole life wasn’t an easy decision.

“I have never stayed anywhere else besides KZN. I’m now adjusting to the cold weather and being stuck in traffic every morning and afternoon,” he added.
His family will join him in Johannesburg next year.

Wits Sport director Adrian Carter said Naidoo is a fantastic acquisition for Wits Sport and the university in general.

“He has a wealth of experience, knowledge, leadership skills and quality relationships in the sporting and educational sector. I have no doubt that with Naidoo at the helm of cricket and hockey, these two sports codes are ones to watch in the future,” Carter said.

Garnett Kruger, head coach of Wits cricket, said, “We are very happy to have Naidoo in the team. With Naidoo’s appointment, we hope to embark on a quest that will ensure that Wits cricket becomes one of the top cricketing universities in the country.”

Naidoo has more than 12 years of experience working as a hockey and cricket coach.

He was promoted to Director of Sport in 2015. He has also worked as both a high school teacher and a lecturer at Varsity College in Durban.
