The Clever Boys will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the league when they play Highlands Park on Saturday

BIDVEST Wits has strengthened its claim for a title challenge after beefing up the team’s already potent attack during the transfer window with the signing of Bafana Bafana player, Fargie Lakay.

Twenty-one-year-old Lakay joins the team on loan in a swap deal with Supersport United, with Mxolisi Macuphu moving to the Pretoria side after only scoring two goals in 14 matches since joining the Clever Boys from Chippa United at the start of the season. Lakay’s permanent deal is set to commence at the end of the season.

Lakay told Wits Vuvuzela, “As a young player it’s a good feeling joining a club like Wits, knowing they’ve won the league a few times. They are standing a good chance winning the league this season and as a young player you want to be part of team that’s winning stuff.”

The Clever Boys currently sit three points ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) log, following their 1-0 victory over Maritzburg United at the Bidvest Stadium at the weekend. However, the Pretoria team has two games in hand.

The team has already surpassed its points tally from last year’s underwhelming 13th place finish, having got two more points at this point in the season than last season’s disappointing total of 30.

Bidvest Wits coach and three-time PSL champion, Gavin Hunt, said that Lakay has many of the attributes that will make him a success for the Clever Boys and boost his side’s title ambitions.

“Obviously he is very versatile, he can play up front and he can play out wide. He’s the right age for us and obviously he has a lot of talent that hasn’t been fulfilled yet. It’s also an opportunity for us to get a player in now so we can build already for next season.”

Wits has had a resurgence this season with the new signings being key to its lead at the top of the PSL. The team’s astute signings included Deon Hotto, Simon Marruy, Robyn Johannes, Gift Motupa, Vuyo Mere and Terrence Dzvukamanja, who have all been impressive for the Braamfontein side.

Wits is still in the Nedbank Cup and will take on Black Leopards next in the competition on Saturday, February 16, with the drive that this season should not end without silverware.

Hunt believes that there is still a long way to go in the title race with his side still to play 11 games until the end of the season.

“We can’t get ahead of ourselves, we know it’s a bit of a false league at the moment in terms of played games. We’ve played more than other teams so you can’t really judge. We just have to concentrate on taking the old adage of taking one game at a time. Try get as many points as we can.”

The Clever Boys will hope to extend their lead at the top by snatching points from Highlands Park at the Makhulong Stadium on Saturday, February 9.
