Fundi will provide students will all around bursary support.
Loan and bursary management company Fundi has opened their first store in Johannesburg on Thursday, February 7.
The new store replaces the Fundi shop in the Wits Matrix which had provided basic services like bursary applications.
“The Braamfontein store has everything; consultants, cashless devices, hangout spots. It’s like a student hub. Whereas at Wits, it was a chair and a desk, and it offered first level service,” said chief marketing officer Mala Suriah. Suriah said Braamfontein was chosen as the new location as it is a hub of tertiary institutions.
“We feel that more than 50% of our clients want physical interaction,” Suriah said. “We went to our target market for ease of access, and we thought that we need a lot more services to provide.”
Tiyisela Baloyi, a Wits honours student said the Braamfontein store was an improvement on the one in the Matrix.
“There’s more space [in the store] so it’s more private when you’re with a consultant. Also, Fundi is not only for Wits students. With this store, someone from University of Pretoria or University of Johannesburg can use it. It’s accessible,” the 21-year-old said.
Local hairdresser Iyke Nwele who operates two doors away from Fundi said that having the bursary fund manager in Braamfontein made sense and was a positive development for the area.
“Braamfontein is a student area,” Nwele said. “Some students come from Soweto or Durban, from poor families, and they don’t have information [about Fundi]. But if a person is passing through they can see it, more especially where there are a lot of students that catch their transport near where [Fundi] is,” Nwele said.
The Fundi store is one of 35 branches across the country and the second store in Gauteng with the other in Pretoria.
