An ATM will replace the branch for the convenience of customers
Capitec is closing its Wits branch with effect from Thursday, August 1, following what the bank says has been a decline in usage over the past 10 years.
Campus clients are being advised to visit the Braamfontein and Auckland Park branches instead.
“We constantly assess branches and their profitability and move them to where the clients are rather than to expect the clients to go where the branches are,” Charl Nel, Capitec bank’s head of communications told Wits Vuvuzela.
“We have made the call to relocate this branch to areas where there is a more pressing need”, he added.
Asive Mabula, a second-year BA general student who banks with Capitec, said she was disappointed that the branch was closing, as she found it more convenient and safer.
“I spend most of my time on campus and the bank is never as full as the one in Braamfontein. I wish that they would reconsider their decision,” she said.
However, Nel says that the closure of the Matrix branch would not mean the erasure of Capitec on campus.
“We will be installing a cash accepting ATM device on the premises, so that clients are able to withdraw, deposit and do other transactions in the absence of a fully functioning branch,” he said.
Nel said that the branch’s current employees would be relocated to other Capitec branches in the vicinity.
