Wits Centre for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine is one of 73 gold medal recipients for keeping studentmoving during lockdown.

The Wits Centre for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine (CESSMhas been awarded with a gold medal and Covid conqueror badge by Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIM-OC). The global health initiative challenges universities and colleges to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health.

The CESSM swiftly adapted new and creative ways to promote physical activity to the Wits community, its facility members and the public. CESSM adopted a mobile app by Technogym called Mywellness and during the hard lockdown, a home version was made available, allowing people to do different exercises for free. The app allowed people to do indoor or outdoor exercises and it tracked the persons progress. The exercises included home workouts that ranged from low level to hard level exercises.

The app also lets the CESSM’s biokineticists supervise specialised exercises for those with non-communicable diseases and injuries. As lockdown restrictions eased, the CESSM also offered walking groups and oneonone classes. These efforts earned the Wits CESSM a gold medal and a Covid conqueror badge

Currently, the Mywellness app functions exclusively for paying members. The app is also utilised for booking gym sessions as only 15 people are allowed in at a time, as the gym needs to be cleaned between sessions

In an interview with Wits Vuvuzela Dr Georgia Torres, a lecturer at the CESSM and the Wits EIM-OC leader explains that there has been a decrease in membership during the pandemic.

What we are trying to do now is to stream our classes like the bodyworks class focused on toning and strengthening muscles, to those who feel uncomfortable or are at risk can take that class from their houses,” said Dr Torres. She adds, I think this is where exercise is going, people don’t need to necessarily be gym members [instead] they can be virtual members of a facility and still get everything.

The EIM-OC official award ceremony will be held in June 2021 as part of the virtual exercise in the Medicine World Congress.
