Wits Football Club makes it to the top eight of the Varsity Football Tournament- “We have worked hard on the squad and I believe the ingredients are there to make this team do well in the tournament. The aim is always to win the tournament”
The Wits Football Club (Wits FC) has made it to the top eight of the Varsity Football Tournament.
During the qualifying University Sport of South Africa’s (USSA) National Club championship, which was recently held in Bloemfontein, Wits FC beat the University of Johannesburg (UJ) 2-0 in their last match, and secured seventh spot overall. This followed wins over Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) with a score of 3-1, and the University of Zululand (1-0).
Gift Baloyi delivered an outstanding performance, according to the club coach, Karabo Mogudi. He scored two goals in the last match and finished the tournament with five goals, making him the second top goal scorer at the USSA. “His talent has for so long promised,” Mogudi said.
Mogudi said that he was elated that the club had qualified for this year’s tournament, as in last year’s, and the players now had a culture of qualifying for this premium competition. “Our efforts in our recruitment strategy are finally paying off as we have amassed a squad that is competitive and has a lot of quality,” he said.
“We have worked hard on the squad and I believe the ingredients are there to make this team do well in the tournament. The aim is always to win the tournament,”Mogudi said.
In the 2015 Varsity Football Tournament Wits FC lost on penalties in the semi-finals.
This year’s tournament starts mid-July and the rest of the top eight is made up of UJ, TUT, University of Fort Hare, University of Pretoria, Central University of Technology, North West University and the University of Western Cape.
