A Wits University student has been arrested.

A member of the Wits EFF has been arrested and will spend the weekend at the Hillbrow Police Station. The arrest follows a fight at the Wits School of Education (WSE) on Thursday night which saw two Wits staff being taken to hospital.

Hilbrow police station spokesperson, Mduduzi  Zondo, confirmed the student’s arrest and said he faces charges of malicious damage to property and assault. The student will appear in court on Monday.

Oridiretsi Masebe, Wits EFF branch secretary said the student was fetched from his res room in Rennie House Residence by Campus Control officers and subsequently arrested by the South African Police Services (SAPS). Masebe said the student currently has no legal representation and members of the EFF are hoping to meet with him today. Masebe said the student was arrested in connection with the fight on Thursday evening.

The fight at the Admin Building on the education campus broke out after members of Wits EFF attempted to join a WSE executive meeting. Security officers, members of the executive and Wits EFF members were involved in a physical altercation which resulted in an academic and a Campus Control officer being rushed to Milpark Hospital. The condition of these two staff members could not be established.

Earlier today, Wits EFF leader, Koketso Poho, took it to Facebook to express his displeasure with the student’s arrest. Poho wrote ,”The EFFSC (EFF Student Command), will not tolerate such bullying by the university management which hides behind structures and handpicks student leaders with whom they prefer to discuss pertinent issues”.
