VoWFM  radio personality Mike Vee, is this week’s cool kid on campus.

Step aside, he’s here, the coolest kid at Wits University this week is 20-year-old, third-year BA Law student Mike Vee, a self-styled radio personality on Wits’ very own radio station, VoWFM.

Mike Vee, who previously co-hosted the breakfast show on VowFM, has taken over the popular VoWFM Drive show from DJ Keyes, for just over a week. The budding radio DJ says he was attracted to radio because he wanted to be a “superhero” and enjoys the interaction he gets with his listeners.

“Everybody kinda wants in, so when I got a chance I was like ‘this is really cool, I’d like to see what it’s about.’ And I think the cool element is that it can change all the time,” he said.

Vee describes himself as an all or nothing type of a guy who admits his passion for radio has seen him less in his law lecture halls and more in the radio studio.

“I am a third-year law student which is probably less of a priority than it should be. I don’t go to class very much. I spend most of my time in there (VoWFM’s radio studio),” he said.

For inspiration, Vee looks up to YFM’s DJ Sabby, DJ Ankletap and Khutso Theledi, 5FM’s Nick Hamman and 947’s Anele Mdoda to name  a few.

Vee believes that although South African media faces financial constraints, the local radio landscape is still competitive on a global scale. “I would honestly say that if you were to listen to a good radio show in South Africa, it would be as good if not better than anything else in the world,” he said.

“You do work hard as a radio presenter, but I’ve seen people work in other fields, and the hard work here is a lot more fun than the hard work is elsewhere,” he said.
