Bidvest Wits clinch a point in their first league match against Free State Stars.

Bidvest Wits’ 2018/2019 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season got off to a resounding start after beating Free State Stars 3-0 on Saturday, August 4, at Bidvest Wits Stadium in Braamfontein.

The Clever Boys were hoping to redeem themselves after a disappointing display last season which saw them finish in 13th place.

Wits fans came out in their numbers to show their support for the team who managed an early breakthrough when captain Thulani Hlatshwayo scored in the tenth minute.

Bidvest Wits increased their lead when Xolani Machupu headed the ball past Free State Star’s goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangari, after receiving a cross from midfielder Deon Hotto in the 29th minute.

Hotto capped off his man of the match performance with a nice move for his debut strike in the 76th minute of play to end off an emphatic opening game.

The home team’s assistant coach Paul Johnstone told Wits Vuvuzela that he was happy with the team’s start to the season. “Coming from a very poor season last season, it was important for us to get off to a good start and we did just that today. I am over the moon with the result,” Johnstone said.

Johnstone was standing in for in for coach Gavin Hunt who watched the game from the stands following his suspension from last season.

Despite the victory, Bidvest middle fielder Elias Pelembe told Wits Vuvuzela he felt the game was not an easy one.

‘We were playing a team that is always giving us problems. We managed to score a little bit early and that made things a little bit easier for us.

The most important thing is that we managed to get three goals and the three points,” he said.

Wit’s new signing, Simon Murray, made his PSL debut coming on for the last few minutes of the game. “I am happy to be here, there has been a great atmosphere around the club, ” said the new striker.

Bidvest Wits will play their next game against Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB stadium on Tuesday, August 7.
