Statistics South Africa says a further half a million jobs have been lost in the second quarter of 2021.

The number of unemployed people in South Africa has increased once again and the high unemployment rate has now taken the number one spot in a list of 82 countries. The current unemployment rate rose from 32.6% to 34.4% in the second quarter, unemployment is now seen as another pandemic in South Africa.

Additionally, according to a report by Statistics South Africa, a great number of people who were actively job-hunting have now simply given up. The finance industry has been the hardest hit as 270 000 jobs were lost. The recent unrest, coupled with strict lockdown regulations have contributed to the dismal second-quarter statistics.
