Wits University basketball side defeated in derby clash against University of Johannesburg (UJ).
The Wits University basketball side went down 71-62 on Thursday, April 19, to local rivals Univerity of Johannesburg (UJ) in what was a fiery encounter at the Wits main campus in Braamfontein.
Both sides appeared evenly matched but UJ made their chances count and were ruthless in punishing Wits.
UJ took an early lead and never gave it up. Wits would come to rue their mistakes as their crosstown neighbours increased the lead and ultimately walked away with the win.
Second-year BCom student Thuto Bogodile told Wits Vuvuzela that the team’s performance was underwhelming and that they had been too inconsistent this season.
“I don’t know what was wrong with the boys today, they just weren’t motivated. The boys need to up their game.”
“The team has been on and off this season. When I feel like there’s a good feeling then something like this happens,” she said.
Wits number six Bulelani Mabudusha said that team were just not themselves today.
He told Wits Vuvuzela, “In this game, we let UJ get ahead quite early and it was quite tough to get back into the game. But we fought.
“We need to improve on team communication on the defensive side. When it gets to offense we need to remember our sets and where guys need be,” he said.
The result means that Wits have only won two of their five games so far in the Inner City Super League.
In another match, the Wits Lady Bucks side lost by a slim two point against the Phoenix Flames in a closely-fought 40-38 result.
Wits Basketball will host the annual Ashraf Lodewyk tournament from April 23 to the 29 as a memorial for late Wits star Lodewyk who passed away 15 years ago.
